By outward metrics, everything appeared successful. But inwardly, things weren’t pretty. So he turned to a trusted mentor for guidance and heard these words: “Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life.” It wasn’t the response he expected, but it continues to be the answer he needs.

Too often we treat the symptoms of toxicity in our modern world instead of trying to pinpoint the cause. This line might end up on Justin Vernon’s ‘Bon Iver’ tombstone. There’s something irresistible about the thought of a bearded dude from small-town Wisconsin retreating, heartbroken, to a cabin to write some songs – especially when the result is a record that sounds as hushed and introspective as Bon Iver’s 2007 debut, For Emma, Forever Ago. These days, Vernon is more likely to poke fun at the image, but it endures because it fulfils a fantasy for us as listeners. Even if we don’t care for the outdoors, most of us occasionally want to escape our lives, be alone with our thoughts, and see if we can tap into something true. In a time of easy distraction, the idea of heading into a cabin at the edge of the world to create is alluring. By tying the intimacy of that image to Justin Vernon’s music, we’re able to take the trip with him.

By Mark Richardson, Pitchfork

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row custom_padding=”0|0px|27px|0px|false|false” padding_top_1=”25px” padding_top_2=”60px” padding_right_1=”25px” padding_right_2=”25px” padding_bottom_1=”25px” padding_bottom_2=”25px” padding_left_1=”25px” padding_left_2=”25px” _builder_version=”3.18.8″][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”3.18.8″ padding_bottom=”25px” padding_left=”25px” padding_right=”25px” padding_top=”25px” parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][et_pb_image src=”https://storycollective.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/mumford_delta_02.jpg” _builder_version=”3.18.8″ custom_margin_phone=”-50px||-100px” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|phone”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”3.18.8″ padding_bottom=”25px” padding_left=”25px” padding_right=”25px” padding_top=”60px” parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.18.8″]

Delta

Mumford & Sons

With Wilder Mind Mumford & Sons went electric, ditching the banjos and acoustic guitars for a more plugged-in sound.
